34th Workshop – Bluetooth: Technology Innovations & Applications

VIRTUAL EDITION – WEBINAR : Tuesday 29 June 2021, 12h30-14h15

TOPIC OF THIS WEBINAR

In this virtual workshop we will address technology innovations that have been adopted in the latest versions of the Bluetooth standards, such as mesh networking, low-power features, and LE Audio.

Speakers from industry will then zoom in on the possibilities and challenges that these innovations offer for their applications in assets tracking/monitoring, and smart audio systems.

PROGRAMME

12h30Introduction
Kris Hermus, Coordinator Wireless Community & Innovation Program Manager Flanders, imec
12h40A digital communication twin for managing a QoS-enabled heterogeneous Bluetooth mesh network
Jeroen Hoebeke, Professor, imec-IDLab-UGent
slides (members only, login required)

With the release of the meshing specification, Bluetooth Low Energy made the transition from a star-based topology to a true mesh networking topology, now offering a standardized way to achieve multi-hop communication. Following a short introduction to the Bluetooth Mesh specification, we will present two innovations designed within the ICON BLUESS project, which can turn a smart light mesh backbone into a trustworthy carrier for diverse sensing and actuation devices: QoS extensions for Bluetooth meshing and autonomous network management using a digital communication twin.
13h00Energy harvesting for and from BLE nodes
Sofie Pollin, Professor, KU Leuven – ESAT & Principal Scientist, imec

• Wireless power transfer and reception
• Co-design waveform and rectifier
• Short demo video
13h15Towards sustainable IoT solutions using the BLE low-power node and friendship features
